The incident took place around 12:39 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13, on Reef Road in Fairfield.

According to Granata, a Fairfield Police Officer was advised by a passerby that a person had just been struck by a vehicle on Reef Road just north of Veteran’s Park.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Michael Smith, 25, of Fairfield, lying on the ground in front of 783 Reef Road and was suffering from several injuries, Granata said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Smith was walking south on the sidewalk in front of 783 Reef Road when he suddenly crossed over Reef Road without looking for oncoming vehicles according to witnesses.

Smith was struck by a vehicle traveling south on Reef Road driven by Anot Ifrach, 29, of Fairfield.

Several witnesses to the accident, who were walking in the area stayed with Smith while first responders were en route.

"There is no indication that speed was a factor in this case, and the pedestrian did not use a crosswalk to cross the street," Granta said.

Smith was treated on scene by first responders and transported to Bridgeport Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident is under investigation by the Fairfield Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
